DA HYCOM Team
We will implement several data assimilation techniques in idealized, regional and global ocean model simulations in order to come up with solutions to improve the accuracy of internal wave predictions in the Navy's ocean forecast system. We will aim to minimize spurious high-frequency motions found in current implementations of HYCOM that disrupt the ocean model energetics, which is crucial for using the assimilative model simulations to study small scale/high-frequency ocean dynamics.
Top Level Tasks
Reduce the generation of high-frequency noises due to data assimilation and thermobaric instabilities.
Implement new assimilation systems (4DVAR, LETKF) that may yield significantly better ocean forecasts.
Validate the systems against past and new observations.
