Code of Conduct

As a group of scientists gathered together through this NOPP, we share a responsibility to act ethically and professionally. As a team of diverse individuals, we aim to act in a professional manner that is welcoming to all, and free from any form of discrimination, harassment, or retaliation. Oceanography values and welcomes individuals of diverse identities and characteristics. This code of conduct is aimed to make our team a great group of people to work with, especially for those people who have faced more adverse working environments in the past.

Our goals are:

  • Treat all team members with respect and consideration, valuing a diversity of views and opinions,
  • Be considerate, respectful, and collaborative,
  • Communicate openly with respect for others, critiquing ideas rather than individuals,
  • Aim to follow principles of open and reproducible science to accelerate community progress,
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants, and
  • Be cognizant of the particular obligation to model appropriate behavior during interactions that involve the inherent power differentials among team members.

All NOPP participants should feel empowered to prevent, report, and/or otherwise mitigate any behavior that violates the spirit of the above shared goals, including discrimination, harassment, or bullying by others. If a participant chooses to report, they can contact their group project lead, or NOPP leads Amy Waterhouse (awaterhouse@ucsd.edu) or Maarten Buijsman (maarten.buijsman@usm.edu).
